TISO, Wagner
Composer, arranger, instrumentalist, conductor. Born in Tręs Pontas, Minas Gerais, in 1945, he is essentially an autodidact. After playing with a number of popular music groups in his native Minas Gerais, he relocated to Rio de Janeiro in 1964. Soon he began working with prominent artists, including Paulo Moura and, from 1969 on, as a member of the group Som Imaginário that accompanied Milton Nascimento. He accompanied several Brazilian musicians to international festivals in Montreux, Athens, and the United States. He has often been awarded several prizes for his work as arranger and instrumentalist. Starting in 1977, he established a solid career as a composer of music for film, theater, and television, working with some of the most important film makers and television producers in Brasil, and especially noteworthy being his long collaboration with the director Walter Lima Júnior. His extensive discography covers all the major genres in Brazilian popular music and jazz. His original compositions include several pieces for piano, orchestral suites, and concertante works, all of which show a skilfull blending of improvisation and compositional rigor.
