| Born
in Santos in 1943, he studied the piano with Dinorah de Carvalho,
and theory and composition with Osvaldo Lacerda and Camargo Guarnieri.
In 1967, he won a scholarship to study at Santiago de Compostela with
Clemente Terni. Two years later he went to Darmstadt, where he studied
with Gyorgy Ligeti and Lukas Foss, continuing his studies in Paris
with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen. Back in Brazil, after directing
the Conservatório de Cubatão, he was appointed in 1975 as a professor
of composition at the Arts Institute of the Universidade de Campinas
(UNICAMP), São Paulo, a position that he still holds. He directed
the Institute from 1982 to 1987. In 1986, he obtained a doctoral degree
from the same institution. From 1993 to 1995, Almeida Prado was awarded
the Max Feffer Prize, and awards by the Associação Paulista de Críticos
de Arte (APCA) and the Fundação Nacional de Arte (FUNARTE). His works
have been performed throughout Brazil, Europe, Israel and the United
States, and he has received numerous commissions and several international
awards. He is a member of the Fondation Internationale Nadia et Lili
Boulanger (Paris), the Associação Cultural Brasil-Israel (São Paulo),
the Academia Brasileira de Música (Rio de Janeiro), and the Academia
de Artes e Ciências (Campinas). |
